Visually and functionally divided into two separate pavilions, the Edgeland Residence, designed by Bercy Chen Studio and located on the shores of the Colorado River is surprising to say the least. The sustainable features of the project are meant to heal the land of its former industrial character: “The project raises awareness about a diminishing natural landscape and its finite resources by creating a balance between the surrounding industrial zone and the natural river residing on opposite side of the site“.
One of the volumes accommodates the sleeping areas, while the other shelters the social zones. Floor to ceiling windows ensure a high amount of natural light and a good connection with the outdoors. The elongated roofs filled with soil and grass keep the residence cool in the summer and warm during winter time. Other sustainable additions include hydronic heating & cooling, geothermal heat exchange and phase-change thermal heat storage. Aside from its obvious aesthetic feature, the swimming pool provides an additional thermal mass included in the geothermal system.
